Le Boucher (The Butcher) is possibly Claude Chabrol’s best known and critically acclaimed film. This second ironic send-up of the old Sherwood Schwartz sitcom is even funnier than The Brady Bunch Movie. Shelley Long and Gary Cole return as the married heads of the merged family known as the Bradys, and Christopher Daniel Barnes and Christine Taylor reprise their roles as eldest stepsiblings Greg and Marcia. As with the first film, the clever premise finds the Brady clan caught in a kind of ’70s time warp, while the rest of the world has moved well into the ’90s. Greg is still looking for a “groovy girlfriend,” Mr. Brady thinks the idea of a cable that sends 50 channels to one’s TV set must be a joke, and Mrs. Brady spends hours at the beauty shop only to look exactly the same as she went in. There’s a plot involving an imposter (Tim Matheson) who claims to be Carol’s long-lost husband, but the real charge in this comedy comes from the way these pseudohip characters deal with sexual taboos (is there any real reason that Greg and Marcia shouldn’t get it on?) and the incredulous reactions of other people. –Tom Keogh

On his 13th birthday, Tyson beats Kai to become National Beyblade Champion. Kai’s team, the Blade Sharks, is forgotten as he, Tyson, Max, and Ray become teammates (with Kenny as computer guru) headed for a tournament in Asia. While the others celebrate their new identity as The Bladebreakers and develop an espirit de corps, Kai remains aloof and arrogant. In Hong Kong, the quintet encounters Ray’s former team, the White Tigers. Ray apparently left under less than amicable circumstances, and there are old scores to settle. The White Tigers are clearly bad guys, but they’re a little too eager to steal and sabotage their opponents for characters in a show aimed at small boys. The storytelling is awkward, with plot points beginning and ending arbitrarily, and director Toshifumi Kawase fails to infuse the matches with much excitement, weakening the focus of the series. This time the gal, her rainbow-tailed horse Starlite, and her sidekick sprite Twink must face down a selfish princess who has stolen the biggest diamond in the universe, preventing light from reaching the world, and sending earth into a neverending winter. (Don’t try to justify the plot from a scientific standpoint.) The rerelease of this 1985 production marks the relaunching of the Rainbow Brite franchise, following the successful returns of other ’80s era cartoon characters like Care Bears and My Little Pony. Nostalgic young parents will revel in the big hair and big shoulders, and little ones will just enjoy the pretty horses and the colors. Louis L’Amour’s easy voice with its gentle rhythm sets the tone and pace of the film in a spoken introduction to this loping, rambling three-hour-plus TV-movie adaptation of his novels The Daybreakers and Sackett. Sam Elliot stars as the elder Sackett, a nomad hunting and trapping in the mountains who happens upon an ancient treasure. Tom Selleck and Jeff Osterhage are his younger siblings, forced to leave home to avoid a Hatfield and McCoy situation. As the Sackett brothers wind their way across the Midwest prairies and mountains we join them on cattle drives and gold hunts, in gunfights and fistfights, and in a climactic showdown as they find their place in the world. This 1979 film rambles and meanders like a lazy river winding through a beautiful landscape of peaks and plains and forests, punctuated by the occasional gunfight and enlivened by a story that celebrates both the open range and the taming of the towns. Elliot looks almost young but flashes his savage eyes behind a thick black beard, while Selleck’s easygoing manner is backed up with a stony-faced determination. The excellent cast includes a veritable who’s who of Western character actors: Glenn Ford, Ben Johnson, Gilbert Roland, Gene Evans, Jack Elam, Slim Pickens, L.Q. Jones, Mercedes McCambridge, and Pat Buttram.
